Because France 05/10/2024

When something happens and you don't know why, they have an answer in France~ "Because. France".

Todays itinerary falls in that category.  As mentioned yesterday, today was all planned out.  After breakfast we would drive to Les Eyzies and tour the the Muse`e National De Prehistorie.  This museum is a French institution, founded in 1918.  It is housed in a cliff face in Les Eyzies.  It is recommended that anyone who travels to this region to study the caves of prehistoric man start here.  This was our plan.  We arrived at the museum about 10:00 and spent two hours there.  After we finished the museum tour, we thought we would have lunch before exploring the caves.  We had a list of caves we wanted to see.

But first lunch.  We found a very nice restaurant, Hostellerie du Passuer, overlooking the Dordogne River.  We had a nice lunch on the outdoor veranda.

Anytime you make a plan to do anything, it would serve you to have an alternate plan.  This trip has been planned for an extended period of time.  Plan A was to attend the museum. After lunch we stopped by the tourism office to get a map to the caves.  Plan B was to go to the Grotte du Font-de-Gaume.  We were informed at tourism office that this cave was closed.  Plan C was to go to Grotte du Grand Roc.  We drove to this cave and were told we needed reservations and the earliest we could get in would be after 4:00.  Plan D was to go to the Grotte des Combarelles.  We did this and when we got to the ticket office, they asked if we had a reservation.  The answer was no.  They said they had room for 1 person on the tour.  We told Harry he should go on the tour, not to worry about us, we would wait in the car for the next two hours and when he got back, we would look at his pictures and he could tell us all about the drawings of the animals. We spent a lot of time researching the cave drawings, however, we overlooked the requirement for reservations.

I enjoy talking to other people and hearing about their travels, what works and what did not.  If your plans bring you to this area and you want to visit the caves,  check on reservations.

On our drive back to Sarlat, we stopped at Beynac.  One of the loveliest villages in France and it is located on the Dordogne River...another medieval city overlooked by a medieval castle

After Beynac, we drove back to Sarlat.  We stopped at the local grocery store, the InterMarche, to pick up a few items. You can imagine our surprise when we found they had "Bordeaux Superior" wine on sale for 3.77 euro. You can't find this at home.

We came back to our apartment, put up our wine and went out for dinner. We chose a nice French restaurant, "Le Moulin des Chevaliers" (all the restaurants are French),  I had Foie Gras and Canard for dinner. Very good.
