Exploring the Dordogone 05/09/2024

Today I am just trying to catch up on my journal posts.  We settled into our apartment in Sarlat last night.  Our itinerary for today was to travel to the village of Les Eyzise and visit the National Museum of Prehistory and then visit the caves that reveal the traces left by ancient men in France.

It is tiring to be a tourist, but fortunately we make our on schedule.  After a good night's rest,  we got up around 08:00 and after coffee and pastries, we were ready for the day around 11:00.  We decided to alter our schedule travel to Rocamadour.  It is recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in France.  Rocamadour traces its origins back to the year 968.  It is located in a gorge above the Dordogne River.  For centuries it has attracted visitors from all over the globe.  Our visit to Rocamadour was worth the visit.  It was not very far from Sarlat, but the roads were winding, hilly, and for the most part single lane. It took us about and hour to get there.  We had a good visit.

Before leaving, we decided to have lunch and got into line to eat at restaurant in the village.  To our dismay, after being in line about 15 minutes, we were told the service line concluded at 2:00.  We knew, but forgot that restaurants close from 2:00 to 7:00.  No lunch here.

We drove to Gourdon, another medieval village about 25 miles away.  We got there about 3:00.  Their restaurants were closed also.  We did find one shop open, where we got get a pre-made sandwich.  Not the French meal we wanted , but very good.

On our way back to Sarlat, we stopped off at a cheese farm.  We bought some goat cheese to go with our snacks for later in the evening.  A good day, great scenery, and good sandwiches.
